Group lessons consist usually of three or more players and is used to
incorporate the general principles of tennis. The
professional
instructor is there to give overall
instruction and not individual technical
stroke issues.
Info for Students

- Students should have same skill level as possible
- Have a specific lesson goal in mind

- Proper
tennis equipment (racquet, shoes, etc.)
- Adequate hydration
- Adequate cool down (stretching approx. five minutes)
As an Instructor I enjoy when my
students are pushed to the point where they are tired. I
believe that it gives them a sense that they have
accomplished something in their
tennis lesson. It also gives me
the satisfaction that I have given them a workout so
that they would like to come back.
I often do this with just
the right amount of instruction and drills as to keep
the lesson moving but not to tire the student to the
point of exhaustion.
In the cases where I get
students that are in good physical condition and
actually look for a good workout, I usually point them
in the direction of
Cardio Tennis, which is a one hour
workout that is not just geared to tennis players but,
instead is a non-instructional class where the
participants can get a heart pumping workout without
necessarily being concerned about proper tennis
technique.
For those individuals that
want to concentrate on their strokes however, I
encourage them to participate with a couple of
their friends who might want to split the cost of the
lesson in order to save on expenses.
What I do when teaching this type of class is to pick a
theme. The theme may be anything from racquet
preparation on the forehand to
serving.
With everyone having their
own issues or stroke deficiencies it is not the time to
work on any one individuals problems.
Instead, what I do is to
stress the techniques by demonstrating the stroke and
then have go through several
tennis drills where the stroke can
be utilized.
When taking a group
lesson, don't put a lot of pressure on yourself to outdo
your fellow students, even though you may feel like they
are your competition. Instead try and pay strict
attention to the instructor and the particular stroke
that he is teaching. There will be plenty of time in the
future to try what you have learned on your friends.
