Will Wearing The Right Tennis Apparel or Tennis Clothing Help You Play Better?

Your tennis apparel is as much a part of your game as your tennis racquet. When you look good you feel good about what you're doing.

Your choice may not actually do anything for the technical aspect of your game but, it can't hurt if you don't have to think about what you're wearing.

It's not that wearing the best tennis clothes can make you play better, it's more like whether you think that it can help you play better.

Although, I would have to admit that when I don't have to worry about my tennis clothing or whether or not my tennis shoes are going to hold up, that's just one less thing that I have to think about during a match.

There are many tennis apparel manufacturers, most of which offer high quality sportswear, from Wilson to Adidas to Nike and more.

While your choice may be based on what your favorite professional player wears, your choice is more of a personal decision than lets say purchasing a racquet.

Wearing comfortable tennis clothing is very important in being able to move to the ball in order to hit it. You wouldn't go out and expect to be at your best dressed in a business suit.

Just recently I had a young man come out to one of our adult clinics and he was dressed in long pants and sandals. He asked if he could join our clinic for that night. I had to tell him that he was not dressed in the proper tennis apparel.

I would venture to say that this young man probably had never played tennis before and just wanted to try it because he saw how much fun the participants were having.

But, the liability risk that was there for him was too great for me to allow him to join us that night.

So the bottom line is don't go to your local club and ask to play if you are not dressed in proper tennis apparel.

You'll Feel Better

I know for me, when I purchase new tennis apparel or buy a new tennis racquet, it gives me a little more incentive to go out and play tennis.

When dealing with your junior player, this may be just the thing to entice them to enjoy practicing a little more, thus, sticking with the game a little longer.

Ultimately, we know however, that the clothes will not "make them", it will just make them feel better about playing and practicing.

And aren't we as adults the same way. We all like to look our best even if we are going to sweat and get dirty. The next time that you watch a football game, notice how neat and clean the players are before the game starts and how they look after the game is over.

Well, you may say that they are not paying for their uniforms, but we have to pay for what we wear on the court. While this is true in the general sense, understand that they have paid for the privilege of wearing those uniforms with many years of development through practice, hard work and dedication.

Therefore, if we want our efforts to succeed on the court, we need to look our best!

Men vs. Women

Generally speaking, men don't care as much about their appearance while playing tennis as much as ladies do.

I can speak from how the guys where I teach come to the court versus how the ladies come dressed.

The guys are not as concerned with having everything matching as the ladies are but, that's okay because they are more concerned with winning than how they look when they win.

The ladies on the other hand, have to have their hair and nails just right and the perfect earrings that match their outfit. For the ladies, sometimes it is more of a social event and looking their best than whether who wins or loses.

That's okay, I kind of like that difference in the genders and how they approach learning and competing in tennis.

The Good Ol' Days

When I look at video or photos of players thirty years ago I often smile at the tennis apparel that they wore back then. Oops! So did I. I remember how tight the shorts were and how high the socks were also. Well, that was then and this is now.

I wouldn't wear what I wore back then and even sometimes when I see those pictures of myself, I have to laugh.

Well, I guess in another fifteen or twenty years, these will be the good ol' days and who knows, maybe the shorts that I wore back then will be back in fashion.
