Learn
the
Correct Tennis Court Dimensions
I can remember as a young child
that at our park we had a
tennis court that was not built to the correct
specifications. As a matter of fact, the fence that surrounded the baseline was
only about three feet away.
This was
not very
conducive
to
really
learning
the game
or
playing
a match
but, it
was all
that we
had.
Also,
there
was
always
glass on
the
court
and the
net was
constantly
in
disrepair.
This is
the
reason
that at
the
facility
where I
teach I
really
focus on
court
maintenance
and
making
sure
that the
court is
clean
and free
of
debris.

When we
travel,
I enjoy
staying
at
hotels
and
tennis
resorts
that
provide
tennis
courts.
I
especially
pay
attention
to how
they are
maintained.
I also
notice
if the
lines
are
straight
and the
slope to
allow
for
water to
drain
from the
court.

The
Right
Direction
Most
tennis
courts
face in
the
north to
south
direction.
The
reason
for this
is so
that the
sun does
not
become a
factor
when
hitting
the
ball.
Have you
ever
tried to
drive
and look
into the
sun?
Well,
that
should
give you
an
indication
of how
difficult
it is
playing
on a
east
west
facing
court.
They are
out
there
and for
the most
part you
don't
see a
lot of
players
playing
on them.
They are
just too
difficult
to
adjust
to, even
with
sunglasses,
visors,
or a
hat.
Unless
you
choose
to play
at night
or at
high
noon
(which
can
still
present
a
problem
for
serving)
there
courts
are
pretty
much
just for
decoration.
I can
remember
at one
particular
court
that I
played
on that
not only
were the
courts
facing
the
east-west
direction
so that
you
couldn't
play
during
the day,
the
lights
were
also
placed
in that
direction.
Thankfully,
the
municipality
where
these
courts
were
built,
decided
to
renovate
the
facility
and they
did away
with the
courts.
So, not
only do
the
tennis
court
dimensions
play an
important
role,
also the
direction
the the
court is
facing
is of
the
utmost
importance.

The best
way to
determine
if they
are
correct
is to
get a
tape
measure
and
measure
the
width
and the
length.
What do
you do
if and
when you
find out
that the
tennis
court
dimensions
are
inaccurate?
What you
could do
is to
let the
club or
facility
know and
have
them
address
it with
the
company
that
painted
the
lines.
After
all, we
do not
want
that to
be an
issue
not
necessarily
for us
when we
play,
but when
you go
to other
facilities
you may
wonder
why you
are not
making
the
shots
that you
do
because
the
tennis
court
dimensions
were not
right.
Sport
Specific
It is
good to
know the
size of
the
court so
that you
can set
up
tennis
drills
that are
specific
for the
sport.
What I
mean by
this is
I often
see
coaches
training
their
players
by
having
them run
long
distances.
Now, I
think
that if
the
player
loves
running
that
they
should
do it,
not
necessarily
for
tennis,
but
because
they
like to
run.
Tennis
is more
of a
stop and
go sport
with
quick
bursts
of speed
followed
by the
ability
to
recover
quickly.
These
are
things
that
long
distance
running
are not
geared
to
provide.
Especially
in light
of the
way that
you
participate
when
playing
tennis.
As an
example,
let's
say that
you play
a point
and you
get
winded.
Your
ability
to
recover
can mean
the
difference
in
whether
you will
win or
lose the
points
following
that
one.
