Do not Overlook Your Tennis Gear!

Your tennis gear is probably one of the most important aspects of building a success foundation in the sport. Think of your racquet as a craftsman thinks of his tools he uses as a part of his livelihood. Would he use tools that were poorly or cheaply made? Of course not.

He would seek out only the best in order to make the job easier and to do his very best. So, you want to play tennis? Well, the first thing that I want to ask is, what took you so long?

Let's get you started for your best tennis experience by looking at the tennis gear that you will need.

The Racquettennis gear

The first thing that you will need is a racquet. These come in various lengths, weights and head sizes.

Children's racquets come in 19 inch, 21 inch, 23 inch, and 25 inches. You may also however, find some 26 inch racquets.

Adult racquets are 27 inches long and can be up to 29 inches according to International Tennis Federation rules. The ITF is the governing body for tennis.

The Right Shoes

Choosing the correct shoes is no easy task today, but it is a very important part of your tennis gear. Which manufacturer, what style, what color. While those choices are personal ones I do recommend that you choose a quality "tennis" shoe. I have seen individuals come out and play tennis with running shoes or other types of shoes and sustain ankle injuries which can sideline them for months.

Tennis Balls

I can always tell a beginner when I see them. They come out with a racquet with manufacturers cardboard advertisement still attached and a "bag" of tennis balls. Now I'm not poking fun at these individuals because they just didn't know any better.

They probably always wanted to play tennis and found themselves caught up in the frenzy of one of the televised pro tournaments and decided to go to their local department store and make a purchase.

*Update* - After doing research on this "bag of balls" concept, I have learned that these balls while not suitable for tournament play, are in fact pressureless tennis balls.

These pressure-less balls are perfect for ball machines and also for camps and clinics. They last about three times longer than the traditional balls.

What that means for me is that I can save money and trips to the store and focus more of my time teaching and developing games for my students.

They have the same weight and are the same size. I started purchasing these balls for all of my tennis clinics and tennis camps and they have saved me time and money due to their lasting qualities.

These pressure-less balls are a good purchase for anyone who is just a casual player and they are excellent for using in ball machines.

Tennis Apparel

While one the most expensive parts of the game, your clothing does not have anything to do with your performance on the court. Well, let me clarify that.

In the general sense I would not go and play a match in a tuxedo. Does that make my skills any less, no. But, if I want to play like a tennis player I want to look like a tennis player. As I heard one person say "fake it until you make it".

Okay, now that you have all your tennis gear in hand don't forget the next thing. Learn the game the right way first and don't try and teach yourself or worst don't think that you can learn everything by watching on television or computer. Go out and take a lesson or two and learn from a certified professional.
