Taking
Tennis
Lessons
can get
you to
hit like
the
Pros!
Looking for tennis lessons for you or your child can be a daunting task.
Browse our site for a list of places to learn the game. Whether you are 8 or 80,
taking a lesson can raise your skill level.
This
page is
for
anyone
who
always
wanted
to
take
a
lesson,
but were
maybe a
little
apprehensive
or
unsure
about
where to
turn.
I find
that
even
though
I'm not
playing
competitively
anymore,
I still
learn
something
new
about
tennis
everyday.
I now
take
what I
learn
and
teach my
students
and put
on this
site in
order to
pass
along
the
knowledge
and
experience
to help
others.
What I
Don't
Like
About
Tennis
Lessons
As a
tennis
student,
I found
myself
trying
too hard
to
follow
the
instructors
every
direction.
What I
mean by
that is,
I tried
to mimic
his
example
too
closely.
Well,
after
all he
is the
pro and
has been
there
and done
that.
Now that
I am a
teaching
professional,
I try
not to
put too
much
pressure
on my
students
in
making
their
strokes
look
like
mine, at
least
not
right
away.
There is
so much
involved
in
learning
to hit
the ball
and
direct
it with
just the
right
amount
of
speed,
direction
and spin
that
sometimes
I have
to catch
myself
and just
let the
student
learn.
When an
instructor
pushes
too hard
to have
the
student
do it
just
like
them, I
think
they
cheat
the
student
out of
that all
important
thing of
learning
what
their
body is
capable
of
doing.
As an
example,
you can
take a
toddler
and try
to show
them how
to 'slam
dunk" a
basketball
but,
their
bodies
are not
developed
enough
to even
bounce a
ball
much
less
trying
to jump
high
enough
to reach
the
goal.
The same
thing
applies
to
learning
a
particular
stroke.
Sometimes
I have
to just
shut up
and let
the
student
experience
what
they are
capable
of doing
on their
own and
not try
and
force on
them in
one hour
what it
took me
years
and
literally
hundreds
of
thousands of
balls.
Now
don't
misunderstand
what I
am
trying
to say
here. I
do
teach my
students
the
proper
technique
and
I really
strive
to get
the best
from
them but,
it's
going to
take
patience
from
both
parties.
First of
all from
the
student,
especially
if they
are not
progressing
as fast
as they
think
they
should.
And also
from the
instructor
as he or
she
tries
different
methods
of
solving
a
technical
stroke
issue.

Lesson
Plan
One of
the
things
that I
encourage
my
students
to after
taking a
private
lesson
is for
them to
go out
and
practice
what
they
have
learned.
They can
either
practice
against
a wall,
use a
ball
machine
or hit
with a
practice
partner.
With
this
it's
like
getting
a being
in
school
and
learning
something
new and
then
getting
a
homework
assignment.
Just
like a
schoolteacher,
I can
usually
tell if
the
student
completed
the
assignment
at their
next
tennis
lesson.
Unfortunately,
I have
experienced
players
who are
just
satisfied
with
coming
and
taking
their
lesson
and
waiting
until
the next
time
they
schedule
a lesson
before
they
play
again. I
like to
call
these
students
"professional
lesson
takers".
Often
however,
they
don't
usually
take
their
game
serious
enough
to get
better,
they
somehow
just
like the
fact
that
they are
taking
tennis
lessons
but, that's
okay
too.
Dress
for the
Occasion
One of
the
things
to
remember
when
scheduling
a
lesson,
whether
it is a
private
lesson
or a
group
lesson
is to
have the
proper
tennis
attire.
What I
mean by
that is
to make
sure
that you
have
good
quality
tennis
shoes,
a
tennis
racquet
that is
the
proper
size and
tennis
clothing
that is
comfortable.
